The 2012 Lift-A-Thon was a huge success on Wednesday as the Johnson Freshman, Sophomores and Junior football players showed off their strength and raised money for the CTJ Football program.
The fundraiser is a great way for the CTJ Football program to stay self sufficient while the school district makes cuts to athletic programs. Each football player goes out to the community and ask for pledges per pound lifted or for flat donations. Individuals and companies may also sign up to be bench sponsors as well.
Each year the money raised from the Lift-A-Thon has gone right back into the Johnson football program for new uniforms and equipment. Over the past 4 years the Jags have been able to purchase new jerseys and new pants each year with the money they raise during lift-a-thon.
The Lift-a-Thon is divided into two sessions with the Freshman going first and the Sophomores and Juniors highlighting the night of Bench Press.
The Freshman were led by Darryl Liningham who lifted 235lb. Right behind Liningham was 230 David Dick at 230lb and tied for third were Ryen Dukich & Ronald Williams 225lb.
The Sophomores and Juniors took to the benches next and the future of Johnson Football did not disappoint. Junior running back Xavier McElhannon lifted 340lb on the bench press just 3 pounds shy of the record set by Marvin Smith two years ago at 350lb. Taking second was Eli Ortiz who lifted 315lb and Caleb Wells took third lifting 305.
